The big release coming out this week is the latest installment of the newly retooled Chronicles of Narnia franchise, Voyage of the Dawn Treader. If I'm going to be honest, I'm not really that sure about seeing this film. The films may be from one of the oldest and most beloved fantasy book series, but they simply don't have anything to ground them in trademark success. Lord of the Rings was a relatively low-budget epic war film set in a fantasy land. Harry Potter is a series about growing up, and how life becomes less fantastic and more destructive. Narnia doesn't really have any of that. They don't have any overarching narrative that's carried along with them, and they don't have any conflicts relatable to the real world. I'll probably still see this new film, but I can't see this series lasting any longer after this one. Prepare for the last film in this franchise, for it is upon us.
