After last weeks depressing outcrop of poor films, I find myself in the rare position of recommending that you go to the movies this weekend. There's actually quite a few films out there that are worth your money. I'm not going to tell you to rush out and see them as soon as possible, but if you're having a lonely summer day, it might be good idea to take a look at some of these films. The new releases range from indie comedy to sci-fi horror, to family comedy.
Starting with the lighthearted and colorful Despicable Me, starring Steve Carrell. This film doesn't have an enormous amount of buzz going for it, but it has the privelege of opening in 3D (The good kind. Not the poorly conceived kind applied in The Last Airbender). It's also playing towards the childs audience, which includes parents accompanying their children, which is a very lucrative demographic. Overall, I can see this film taking in about $34 million this weekend, and holding on pretty well if it's actually good.
The other new release is the next installment in the Predator franchise, Predators. I've spent the past several years being disappointed by the Alien vs. Predator franchise, and I really just want to get back to the heart of this horror franchise. There's a point when it stopped being frightening, and Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror) seems to have gotten back to that. This film actually doesn't look half bad, and may just be a good saturday night monster movie. It should attract the adult crowd, more specifically men, and end up at around $26 million at the end of the weekend.
I'd say that the top film to see this weekend is Lisa Choladenko's suburban comedy, The Kids Are All Right, but that's playing to a very limited release of seven theatres, so if you have the chance to catch one of those theatres, you better lock those tickets down ASAP. This weekend is mostly the calm before the storm, the storm being Chris Nolan's Inception. I'll be back later today with my review of The Dark Knight.
