For once this summer, we have a weekend that didn't strike me as greatly disappointing, or beyond entertaining. This was what nearly every weekend of the year should be, with one bad movie out there, and one undoubtedly good movie being released. The Other Guys took the number 1 slot this weekend, bringing in $35 million. Due to mostly positive reviews and good word of mouth, this film could bring in about $130 million by the end of its run. As for Step Up 3D, it fared slightly better than Cats and Dogs 2 did last weekend, but still boasted an unextraordinary $15 million.
On the flip side, Inception kept up its box office supremacy, dropping another 30% to $18.6 million. With the way this film has been playing to people, it could very well crawl its way to $300 million by the end of the summer. It doesn't have the same opening power of The Dark Knight, but it's just as good, if not more so. Angelina Jolie's Salt came in 4th, gathering $11.1 million to its $96 million total. Dinner for Shmucks took as much a fall as predicted, with $10.5 million in it's second weekend. This weekend was slightly down from the same one last year, but it was still somewhat impressive.
I feel like I should retract my statement of "The Other Guys" being a good movie, because in retrospect, it isn't.
