If the first trailer managed to make me feel mixed about the potential of Hesher, this one just eliminates all that uncertainty. One of the things that felt so off about that first trailer was how typical it felt, like it was holding itself back from being a gritty indie flick. This one just rocked my socks off, because all the insanity wasn't held back, but it wasn't over the top. A nice touch is the end credit card being placed before the title card. I really don't care if critics take this film to pieces. I'll see it either way.

For Your Anticipation: What's A Toro?
It's only opening in limited release this weekend, which is a shame as per usual, but Super actually looks like an interesting sort of mixed bag. I love Ellen Page in pretty much anything, so her playing a semi-sociopath superhero sidekick is to me as catnip is to cats. Rainn Wilson never really impresses me too much, but he isn't annoying to the point of Owen Wilson or Luke Wilson. I'm always suspect on "real life" superhero films like these, because Kick-Ass honestly wasn't much of anything special. I can't yet tell if this will be any different. We'll have to wait and see.Sunday, March 6, 2011
Theatrical Trailer: Super
And with that my crush on Ellen Page is permanently solidified, and Super soars to the top of this year's list of superhero features. I think Thor has modest chances at glory, X-Men: First Class looks awesome by any indication, Captain America looks like cheesy crap, and Green Lantern just looks like crap. Super has that sort of dark indie edge to it that offers it an upper hand that Kick-Ass just didn't. Matthew Vaughn's film targeted the more mainstream demographic. Super seems to be going for something more off-the-wall, and I think that could only help the film in the long run.

Theatrical Trailer: Hesher
And this officially makes five films on the Natalie Portman post-Black Swan film series, and this one looks like it's doing more than just having simple fun. In a change of pace, Portman isn't the main attraction to be had in here, with several different actors offering up their considerable talents. Rainn Wilson (The Office), Piper Laurie (Carrie), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) add their collective talents to this project. Obviously the one people are going to be talking about Levitt, seeing as he's playing a character named Hesher in a movie called Hesher. This looks like an off kilter sort of film, but it looks extreme in probably the best sense. We'll have to wait to see if there's anything Oscar worthy from it, but if anybody gets accolades for their work, it will be Gordon-Levitt. Take a look at the trailer and comment below at your earliest convenience.
