And so we have the inevitable Oscar vehicle from Stephen Daldry, who is woefully known as a contender for nearly every film he releases. He has no acknowledgeable voice in his direction, and his latest film seems like a tedious exercise in such. Curiously taking on the exact same plot as "Hugo", replacing 1920s Europe with 9/11, this looks like the feel good WTC film of the year. There is no effort made to capture the tragedy of it, aside from the fact that Tom Hanks is dead. That's pretty much it.

Theatrical Trailer: Larry Crowne
So it turns out that Tom Cruise has the acting capabilities of Ron Howard. Unfortunately I'm talking about the Ron Howard that brought us The Dilemma, and not the Ron Howard that brought us A Beautiful Mind. His directorial debut, Larry Crowne, looks to have the same premise as Community, except with less clever writing and characters. This looks predictable, not all that intelligent, and quite honestly boring. See for yourself and comment below.

Oscar 2010: Presenters Go In Pairs
From the way this looks, I'd say we're 
looking at a decent stab that the shortest Oscar telecast in a while. Perhaps it won't actually put people to sleep. On the other hand, this is an odd bunch, completely devoid of Tina Fey or Steve Martin. Such a shame, but there's that open space for Best Supporting Actress. Maybe they'll make a surprise appearance, but nothing is set. I just know that this will be a difficult ceremony to sit through if The King's Speech sweeps as many believe it will. I'm praying for an upset.

"Toy Story 3" On DVD and Blu-ray
I'm glad that all the hype since Toy Story 3 released has been rather maintained. By now it's practically a lock for a Best Picture nomination. It's not going to win, which is something we know going in. It's still nice to see that the trilogy ended on a bang rather than a whimper, and people are acknowledging that. What always worries me about any film is how well it will make the transition to the home theater setting, and Toy Story 3 has managed that pretty well. It still holds a somewhat tragic nature, and literally yanks the tears out of your eyes. However, what most will probably do, and rightfully so, is sit down for the entire series in one solid 4.5 hour marathon. It's a lot more compact and a lot more enjoyable than most film trilogies, including The Lord of the Rings. It is a miracle of nostalgia and modern filmmaking, and I hope it is not soon forgotten.
