There's something absolutely wonderful about a subtle approach to light comedic filmmaking, which is not necessarily what Beginners is, but it's close to what it is. Yesterday, I spoke of what gives the term "quirky comedy" a bad name, and this is what gives it a good name. Joy, happiness, and loss handled in an off-kilter, yet not quite upbeat way. As always, it's elevated by a wonderful cast of Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, but the one who has me salivating at the door is Melanie Laurent. She was the second best thing about Inglourious Basterds, and it excites me for the possibilities of this film.
